Faith and Your Health
So many of us have gone to church or to synagogue and heard the preacher or the rabbi read from the bible or the Torah about God having created us all in his image. Most of us have never even stopped for a moment to contemplate what that implies. We also learnt that God created everything and here and there every now and then a few of us stop and look, and we listen and we open our five senses to the absolute magnificence of this world that we live in. For most of us it is only a rarity to take time to appreciate the fullness, beauty (and the perfection) of God's creation. It is only maybe when we just happen to see a beautiful sunset or a beautiful full moon over an open sea or some other striking natural phenomena that we stop to appreciate the miracle of our existence. Some of us also learnt that God not only created everything but is in everything. The Bible says "God is in the heavens and the earth and everything in between". Again most of us were fast asleep when our pastor read this bit and have spent most of our lives trying to find God outside of ourselves and others rather than within.
So if God created us and is in us and in everyone and everything around us, why are we so quick to judge ourselves and others as broken in some way? Maybe if we looked a little deeper we will finally be able to see the deeper purpose and meaning of illness and our so called imperfections. In other words we may see the divine purpose behind illness and imperfection and see that maybe it is God's way of taking us out of our comfort zones and forcing us to grow so that we can contribute at an even higher level to his creation. Then we may also start appreciating the fact that we were created with a phenomenal ability to heal our broken bodies, our broken hearts and our self limiting beliefs that make us believe those that tell us that our illnesses and infirmities are inevitable and largely incurable. We believe those that tell us the best we can hope for is to be able to slow down the progression or alleviate the symptoms of our health scourges.
The truth is that we all have a far greater capacity to heal than we have ever imagined when we are willing to break the stranglehold of our self limiting, ego based, fear based belief systems. As a matter of fact there are crystal clear reflections on this in the Bible. In Psalm 103:3 it is written that "God heals ALL our diseases". Why is it then that so many of us are struggling with so much Dis-Ease in our society and around the world? Why is there so much pain and misery? Are these teachings in the Bible false or has God judged so many of us unworthy of this promise or is there another possibility. In Deuteronomy 7:11-15 God declares "If you obey my laws, my commands and my decrees…I will keep you free from Every Disease." So are we so riddled with infirmities because we are not obeying God? Or is it that we do not believe strong enough or that we are not listening with our hearts and minds to divine inspiration? Maybe it is because we are listening to someone other than God. Maybe it is because most of mankind is still dominated by the whims of the dark ego.
There are two components that are absolutely critical for healing to take place. First of all a total belief that healing is possible no matter what it's name, how long it has been with us or what other people say about it, including the medical profession. Second of all we have to have a total trust that healing is inevitable. As a matter of fact we have to go beyond trust to knowing. For example most of us in this country celebrate Christmas. When a child is growing up and starting back from his very earliest memories receives a number of gifts every year on Christmas day, he or she starts forming a very strong, unwavering belief that on this special day they will receive gifts. Not only do they believe this, but they develop an absolute trust that this will be so in future. Eventually when it happens with absolute consistency, they eventually develop an absolute knowing that this is so and will be so in future. No room for doubt what so ever. This happens for some people as far as their health is concerned. They were totally healthy as children, grew up healthy and strong, have been healthy and strong as young adults and therefore develop a very strong belief that they will continue to be healthy. Not only that but they develop an absolute trust and a deep knowing that they are healthy. These are often the individuals that grow old gracefully with minimal health problems often never having seen a physician. On the other hand when you grew up surrounded by infirmity and have dealt with personal illness after illness and you hear others talk about their misery and health problems and you live in fear that every ache or pain might be heralding the next serious health problem to come along, your belief systems about health will be very different. You are likely to develop a much more negative belief about your ability to be healthy and stay healthy. It will also tend to be very hard to trust that your body is capable of complete health.
In order to heal our diseases we have to change this dynamic fundamentally and profoundly. In other words we have to change our belief system about our capacity for health. This means that we often have to go against so called common knowledge or mass consciousness. For example there is a pervasive belief system in our society that certain illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension or the vast majority of chronic illnesses are incurable and at best can only be controlled and usually only through the use of substances alien to the human body. Society in general also believes that frailty and illness is an inevitable consequence of aging and that ill health is to be expected as we age. Many of us even believe that illness and when we die are predetermined by God and that no matter what we do, outcomes can't be changed. This fatalistic view of life often leads to apathy when it comes to issues such as life style and an even greater tendency to take more and more alien substances to control symptoms of illness. In other words if we really want to be healed we have to have an unwavering belief that we can be healed in spite of the pervasive belief systems of family, friends and society.
Even more important is to learn trust that we can be healed. Belief systems are often more difficult to change because most of us have spent a lifetime building our belief systems, so not only do we have to create a new belief system, but we have to exterminate our old beliefs. On the other hand, when we truly surrender our will to God, which means deciding to trust totally and completely in him AND we are willing to let go of fear which can only come from the ego, our belief systems will shift in the right direction much more easily. When we truly surrender to God, we surrender to love at the highest level which is unconditional love. When we truly learn to love ourselves and to love our bodies unconditionally (and we are not talking about vanity here which comes from the fear that we aren't good enough or that we won't be loved) and we truly believe that we were created in God's image and we believe that God is in everything including each one of us, then we will start treating our bodies like a temple of God should be treated. Then trust becomes easier and easier. Not just trust but deep knowing that our bodies are meant to be healthy and that they are capable of healing fully. Then we also start learning that the mind and the ego are the only two limiting factors that have prevented us from healing up to now. We also learn that by aligning the mind, the ego, our emotions, our relationships with others and even our care of the environment with our spirit and with God who is love, any illness or infirmity can be healed.
We then finally get to the final and most important point of all, and that is a total expectation of healing and health. In other words when we fervently believe we can heal and be healthy again and we have complete trust that this will be the outcome to the point of absolute knowing. If we additionally have an unwavering expectation of healing, then odds of healing increase exponentially. It is also worth reflecting here on a very critical paradigm, called the "Be, Do, Have paradigm". Most people live by a "Have, Do, Be paradigm". For example, most of us believe that we would be happy if only we had enough money, enough health, a great relationship, etc., etc. Then we would be able to do lots of enjoyable things like buy wonderful houses, cars, travel all over the world, make love everyday and then we would be happy. The amazing thing is even though many people achieve many or even all of these things, they remain miserable in their lives. In other words they start off miserable and in spite of all their doings end up miserable. On the other hand when you start from the premise that you are already happy regardless of circumstances such as little money, no house, no car and no passionate relationship, you are far more likely to want to do creative, enjoyable things with what you do have, creating more and more abundance as you move through your life. You then end up being happy which is exactly where you were at the start.
This same paradigm applies to all things including health. If you want health, start off thinking of yourself as healthy and whole in essence. You are then far more likely to do healthy things and follow healthier lifestyle habits. This leads you to move gracefully towards manifestation of even greater health in stead of seeing yourself as broken in some way and trying to move towards health from there. Be happy, joyful, passionate, grateful, confident and excited to start with and you will create more reasons to be happy, joyful, passionate, grateful, confident and excited in stead of the other way around. Remember, Love is all there is, the rest is illusion and distortion and comes from the dark ego, not from God. God bless!!
The sun shines and warms and lights us and we have no curiosity to know why this is so; but we ask the reason of all evil, of pain, and hunger, and mosquitoes and silly people.
